Inferences and Evidence

Not every idea in a passage is stated directly. Authors provide details and expect readers to use them to reach logical conclusions.

Inference — a conclusion based on information in the text. You may need to determine what a passage implies, identify a reasonable conclusion, or choose the evidence that best supports one.

The key rule

A good inference goes beyond what the passage directly states, without going beyond what the evidence supports.

Explicit information vs. inference

Stated directly in the text.

Inference

Something you determine from the information provided.

When Elena reached the restaurant, she checked her phone again. No new messages. She ordered a glass of water but left the menu closed on the table. Twenty minutes later, she sighed, put on her coat, and asked the server for the check.

The passage never states that conclusion, but a reasonable reader connects the clues to reach it.

Making reasonable inferences

An inference must be supported by evidence, but it doesn’t need to be proven with absolute certainty.

Ask yourself

Which conclusion is most reasonable based on what the passage tells me?

Example

During his first week at the new job, Andre arrived thirty minutes early each morning. He kept a notebook beside his computer and wrote down every instruction his supervisor gave him. Before leaving each afternoon, he reviewed the next day’s schedule.

Question: What can reasonably be inferred about Andre?

AHe dislikes his coworkers.
BHe is making a strong effort to succeed.
CHe wants a promotion.
DHe has worked in a similar position before.

Answer: B. Arriving early, taking notes, and reviewing the schedule all show effort. The passage gives no evidence for A, C, or D.

⚠ Watch out: don’t add your own assumptions

Leah sold her car and began taking the train to work.

You can’t conclude she needed money. Perhaps parking was expensive, she wanted to reduce her environmental impact, or the train was more convenient. Your inference comes from the text, not from what you think probably happens in real life.

Combining clues

The strongest inferences come from combining several details rather than relying on one sentence.

Marcus placed the envelope on the kitchen table but did not open it. He made coffee, washed the dishes, and reorganized a drawer that had bothered him for months. Finally, he returned to the table and stared at the envelope again.

When making an inference, ask

  • What details seem important?
  • What do those details have in common?
  • What conclusion explains them best?

Finding supporting evidence

Some questions reverse the process: they give you a conclusion and ask which detail is the best evidence for it.

Given conclusion

The passage suggests that Carla is becoming more independent.

Strong evidence

Carla decided to call the repair shop herself instead of asking her father to handle the problem as he usually did.

Directly shows her taking on something she used to depend on someone else for.

Weak evidence

Carla recently celebrated a birthday.

Getting older is loosely associated with independence but doesn’t demonstrate it.

Strong evidence vs. related information

An answer choice can be related to the topic without actually supporting the conclusion. If you need evidence that a character is generous:

Related, but not evidence

The character has a high-paying job. This describes finances, not generosity.

Evidence

The character gives time, money, or resources to help someone else.

Always ask

Does this detail actually prove or strongly support the idea in the question?

Inferences in informational texts

Inference questions aren’t limited to fiction. You may draw conclusions from facts in an informational passage.

In 2015, the city’s public library offered 40 technology classes and had waiting lists for several of them. By 2025, it offered more than 150 classes covering topics from basic computer use to digital photography and coding.

The numbers don’t state that conclusion, but they provide evidence for it.

TSI strategy: use the evidence test

When you think you’ve found the right inference, ask

What evidence would I point to if someone asked me to prove this?

If you can immediately identify relevant details, your inference is well supported. If your explanation starts with “I just think…” or “This probably happened because…”, you may be adding an assumption that isn’t in the passage.

For evidence questions, work in the opposite direction:

1Identify exactly what the conclusion says.
2Examine each possible piece of evidence.
3Choose the detail that most directly supports that conclusion.

The strongest answer isn’t merely connected to the same subject. It gives a logical reason to believe the conclusion is true.

Textual evidence + logical reasoning = inference

Both parts are necessary. If an answer requires information the author never provides, it’s too speculative. Choose the conclusion that stays closest to the evidence in the passage.
